Laser welding – a reliable connection

Welding seams in visual quality, components without deformation at high production speeds, and no post treatment at all - laser welding delivers such results.

Deep, slim welds are its trademarks. The laser beam penetrates deep into the material. Its energy fuses, at the joint edge of two components, a small amount of material which joins to the molten pool and forms the welding seam.

The processing optics bundles the raw beam emitted by the laser, thereby allowing the beam to focus all its energy on the workpiece and cause it to fuse. With a diameter of just a few tenths of a millimeter, the laser beam is a high-precision tool. At Precitec, you will find not only the suitable processing optics, but also the matched process monitoring system in online or offline operation. Seam tracking systems detect the joining gap and guide the processing optics exactly over the joint. Seam monitoring systems then inspect the welding result.
 

The application spectrum of laser welding far outstrips that of conventional welding - both in the choice of material and in the applications themselves. As well as mild steels, stainless steels and non-ferrous metal, lasers also weld plastics and can braze or cladding material. Precitec offers the right optics for every application.

Deep penetration welding is the result of the enormous laser energy that is focused on a single point. With a power density of over 1 megawatt per square centimeter, the laser beam hits the material and vaporizes it abruptly. The laser beam penetrates deep into the material through the vapor capillary thus created. This process is also referred to as the keyhole effect. The energy from the laser beam fuses the material around the vapor capillary; the molten pool forms the welding seam during cool-down. Because the linear energy is very low, only a minimal amount of heat is admitted into the component. The component is barely deformed and there is no post treatment - benefiting productivity.

Although predestined for deep penetration welding, the laser is also the master of conduction welding. In this process, the laser beam is less-focused, the melting area is usually wider than it is deep. As well as the production of visual seams, this type of laser welding is also suitable for laser brazing and cladding.

Thanks to excellent automation potentials and high process stability, including process monitoring, the laser is used in the most diverse sectors, including for numerous applications in the automotive industry, body-in-white, powertrains and in the production of safety components.
